How do you find out her ring size?

How to get her ring size - without her knowing

Surprising the love of your life with a beautiful diamond engagement ring (opens in new tab) is a wonderful thing to do. But nothing ruins the surprise faster than discovering that the ring you chose simply does not fit… Fortunately, there are several rather cunning ways to work out her ring size without necessarily letting her in on it.

Find out the most accurate ways to measure ring size:

Take her shopping "for" someone else

If you want to be a hundred per cent sure that the ring you choose will fit her, take her shopping for your mother, your sister or anyone else close to you. This exercise is bound to give you a sense of her "taste" and an insight into exactly what you should choose for her - and, of course, in the right size for your beloved.

You may well find that this little outing helps you feel more confident about the kinds of settings she likes, so that you could even design a ring of your own (opens in new tab) to suit her taste.

The only drawback here is that you may find yourself having to buy your mother or your sister a ring - but that can be a bonus if her birthday or a special occasion is just around the corner…

Borrow one of her rings

The chances are that your lady likes rings… like most women… If so, look in her jewelry box for a ring you know she wears on her finger, so that you can measure it and get the size right.

If she never takes off the rings she wears on her hands… you could perhaps offer to clean her jewelry for her. The only drawback here is that you may find yourself measuring a ring, but it could be for a different finger…

Ask one of her friends

Your partner's friends, her mother or her sisters may know the answer you are looking for… If you can trust someone close to her to keep your secret, ask them for help. The chances are that one of them will know her finger size. If not, they will be able to rally round and help you find it out…

Once you have her ring size, you can choose or design a ring, and in effect create a work of art of your own - the ring of her dreams and yours, reflecting the love in your heart.

Sizer

Another option would be to secretly check one of her rings with the ring sizer we have added here for you. If you would like to understand how the different national sizing systems compare, this ring size guide (opens in new tab) explains them.

  • Remember to measure across the knuckle of the finger you have chosen, since that is the widest part of your finger.
  • It is best to measure the finger in the evening.
  • Using an existing ring and a measuring ruler: place the ring on a ruler, check the diameter in millimeters, and compare the millimeters you get using the table below.
  • By measuring the circumference of the finger (if it is not a secret…): using a thread or a thin strip of fabric, wrap it around the finger and lay it on a ruler; that will give you the ring's circumference, and you compare the millimeters you get using the table below.
